Arlington Author Salon

Whitney serves on the organizing committee for the Arlington Author Salon, a quarterly reading series with a twist: each author’s presentation includes something special to tickle the senses. Music, paintings, photographs, tasty treats, fabrics, even smells! The series regularly attracts 50-100 people, and past featured authors include Margot Livesey, Richard Hoffman, Celeste Ng, Michael Blanding, Steve Almond, Michelle Hoover, Ron MacLean, Reggie Gibson, Val Wang, Lisa Borders, and many more. In 2017, the series was awarded its second annual Arlington Cultural Council grant, which enables the committee to pay the presenting authors a small honorarium for their work.

Poems on the Spot

Poetry while you wait! Whitney, along with local writers Allison Adair and Howard DePass, Jr., regularly visits events and festivals around town and types up poems on vintage typewriters. Poems are inspired by phrases provided by the recipient ("I want a love poem about a woman named Justine" or "Just include the word egg in the poem") and completed on the spot. Poems On the Spot has appeared on Georges Island, the Boston waterfront, the Boston Book Festival, the Old South Meeting House, and other venues. Check out the "news" section for upcoming gigs.
